“FIRST ACTIONS TO DECARBONIZATION OF BUILDINGS IN THE HEALTH SECTOR: INVESTIGATION OF THEIR ENERGY PROFILE IN THE AREA OF CENTRAL AND WESTERN MACEDONIA IN GREECE

Hospital buildings are the most energy consuming buildings due to their continuous operation and the need to provide healthy and safe environment for the best treatment and well-being of their inhabitants. Energy management presupposes energy recording. Conducting three energy surveys along with the official energy audits and energy certificates, the energy profiles of 14 Hospitals under the supervision of the 3rd R.H.A. in North Greece were recorded. Proposed installations are in progress improving energy management by implementing actions towards decarbonization that estimate total CO2 emissions reduction to 1.538,78 kg/m2 for all the Hospitals. It is obvious that simple actions such as changing human behaviors towards saving energy and matching real working time of HVAC systems and lighting systems with occupation periods, may maximize energy savings and CO2 emissions reduction. Implementing energy recovery systems, energy storage technologies along with the enforcement for maximization of the use of Renewable Energy Sources, may result to re-establish sustainable hospital organizations.
In this study, pointing distinctive differences in the operation of two major hospitals in North Greece, creating thus totally different energy profiles, distinctive issues for further investigation have arisen as finding the main criteria while searching for the best location of a hospital, answering the dilemma between many versus to one hospital building and highlight the need to implement more energy recovery systems, more energy storage techniques and more Renewable Energy Sources systems in a way that hospital buildings may become energy autonomous and sustainable.
