“ENERGY EFFICIENCY THROUGH PERFORMANCE INDICATING TOOL”

Energy efficient design of buildings and its operations are becoming necessary considering the depletion of conventional resources. With various initiatives from across the world there is still quest for a tool fostering a solution globally. To assist the shift to more energy efficient buildings and evaluate existing system performance we exercise our assessment tool, which is in an exemplary tool competent in assessing buildings parks and stadiums.

Recognizing multiple aspects of energy demand, performance indicators have sought to optimize energy use. Considering the energy consumption and the life cycle of the carbon footprint, the emissions from the building are quite high. Additionally, operational performance emerges as the key factor to optimize energy use, although design and construction also have a vital role.

Many countries across the globe have their own standards and individual methodologies in comprehending energy use based on their local climate, architectural and constructional practices. Performance Indicator framework offers a dynamic approach to contribute to the energy efficiency in terms of assessment and identifying potential links to improvements, and the purpose is to discuss the energy-efficient measures for decarbonizing the environment that have significant influence on energy consumption which is the crux of performance indicators.

“CURRICULUM VITAE”

Zaki Mohammed is a Sustainability professional currently working as the Director of Sustainability Advisory at the Gulf Organization for Research & Development (GORD). Zaki’s current role at GORD requires him to play a pivotal role in bringing advanced sustainability solutions to the built environment including ESCO model approach to identify and implement energy saving opportunities resulting in cost savings as well as reduction in associated carbon emission. He is also managing and supervising the assessment of sustainability in building services as a part of sustainability audits conducted to certify green buildings across the MENA region. Over the years, he is also working in the development of manuals for sustainability and green buildings standards for GCC and MENA region, He is also working with various teams in the development of Green Events Tool in collaboration with UNFCCC.

In creating further awareness about green building practices, Zaki is also involved in the development of GORD’s research projects including Qatar Energy Maps – a visualization tool designed to detail data on energy consumption patterns for district energy planning. Over the last 8 years, Zaki has conducted almost 100 energy audits for existing building spanning across all sectors including healthcare, offices, showrooms, metro stations, high-rise buildings, retail, museums, hospitals and research facilities, FIFA Qatar 2022TM Stadiums (open to air, air-conditioned stadiums) and oil & gas industry. Audits conducted by Zaki has led to an accumulated energy savings of approximately 60,000,000 kWh/annum. Zaki has been instrumental in developing the energy performance calculation tool based on ISO-CEN standards for assessing buildings’ energy consumption and also in the development of energy performance label, which is required by local regulations to demonstrate the energy performance of buildings. Currently, Zaki has been approached to be part of member of the ASHRAE taskforce for building decarbonization, Embodied Carbon/LCA.
